Finish The Bottle

Martin Gayford visited Robert Rauschenberg at his New York headquarters: a deconsecrated convent on Lafayette St, hung in the style of a gallery with his paintings and occupied by a large tortoise. In this week of Radio 3 essays, Martin will recall many such strange incidents – including meetings with Cartier Bresson and Patrick Heron. Martin will weave together art criticism and personal memoir, concentrating on one meeting with a single artist in each episode.
