Heart and Soul: Daughters of Thunder
BBC World Service
In small rural towns across the south of the USA traditional family churches have long been key guardians of black culture, memory and community spirit. Until recently women called to preach in these communities faced opposition. But now an increasing number of women are winning acceptance as preachers and pastors.
Alvin Hall, who grew up in the south, hears stories, prayers and preaching from these women who have gone to such lengths to follow their calling, often driving hundreds of miles to carry the word of God.
